Preparing for employment

How can you increase your chances of getting the start you want?

1. Know what you’re looking for

This helps direct your job seeking and keeps you motivated. Refer to Deciding on a career path if not sure.

2. Become competitively employable

As well as good results, employers value ‘employability’ skills. Employers like to see that graduates have participated in activities which develop these skills - for example, work experience, extra-curricular activities and/or voluntary work.

3. Develop job seeking and job application skills

To find a job you need to understand how jobs are found. Check out Job Seeking for New Grads. To successfully apply for a job, you will need to know how to prepare a high quality application and prepare for interviews.

4. Build a professional network

Start to connect with your industry - it helps keep you informed and motivated, and to develop contacts for job seeking. For example, join a relevant professional association as a student member. Lists of professional associations are available in the Career Research section of Online Career Tools.
