Having trouble deciding on a course or career?
Whether deciding on a course, a major or a career goal, coming to a decision can be tricky. There are often many choices, each with its appealing and unappealing aspects. Here are some tips:
Put career choice in perspective- Remember that what you are choosing here is a starting point for your working life. You will have opportunities to make changes over your working life.
-
Each of us has many interests and can do many things – ultimately, you have to let some ideas go!
-
Perhaps you need to do some more self-assessment. But remember – while it is helpful to know yourself and what might work for you, your choice does not have to be a ‘perfect match’.
- Perhaps you haven’t looked deeply enough into options. It is easy to stay on the surface with careers information. Go beyond reading and talk to people in the field or do some work experience.
- There are different styles of decision-making. For example, some of us have a tendency to put off decisions and gather information endlessly. Others tend to jump too quickly to a decision to have things settled. It helps to know how you make decisions and whether this is causing difficulty.
- If you’ve done some self-assessment, researched your options and still feel uncertain, this is a very appropriate time for a careers consultation.
